Hey gang,
I want to build a really nice page for one of the cities in my area. I also want that page to compete with other websites in Google. So I need your help. Here are some stats: Search term: "doylestown real estate" Competition: trulia, yahoo, homegain, other local websites # of results in Google: 146,000 Average # of monthly searches: 9,900 My goal is to display the listings in Doylestown, some information about the city, information about the areas subdivisions and communities, local attractions, local employers, monthly market statistics, etc. I want the page to be "sticky" and end up on the first page of Google. Here are the 2 questions: 1. What other information would you include on that page. 2. How would you start building links to that page? What would be your plan of action? If you could break it down step by step on exactly how you would proceed, that would be awsome. Is it even worth competing with the "big boys", especially with an interior page? I look forward to your responses.

Should not be hard to do at all. Put together a page that has some nice information about that town which is unique and build links with relevant anchor text to that page.
Some historical information about the town, if there are any activities that people tend to do in town, some school info, what shopping is availible, you could even put who the elected officials are and how to reach them. Here is an example page from my site which is ranking first page of google for the most competitive search terms for that city. http://www.jboyerhomes.com/Summit.php

A combination of links and good content should do the job.
Internal Links 1. Navigational Links 2. Contextual Links 3. Blog Links External Links 1. Ezine Articles 2. Press Releases 3. Social Marketing

So what happens if you are doing well for a certain term that is in your signature and you change it to something else. I have a few pages that could use a jolt, but didn't want to loose what I have. Any ideas?

Thank you all for your feedback. Great advice.
Regarding adding the link to my forum signature, wouldn't Google frown upon a page that all of a sudden received hundreds of links? Let's say I have over 400 signatures on this forum, if I change one of my links in the signature to point to that new page, wouldn't that look suspecious?

It wouldn't happen all of a sudden. Google would need to revisit each on of the pages that has the new link (each forum post). This will take time.
Unless of course they have a sneaky algorithm something or other that would just swap all forum links automaitcally if you switch...(I doubt they would bother with something like that).

I think when you change your signature, it changes on all posts, even ones done long ago. So when you comply with the 3 link rule of the forum, that is all you will have throughout the forums.
