Tip To Increase The Rankings of Your Blog Post - (WordPress, Sort of Technical)
Posted Feb 16, 2008 @ 8:53 am, Viewed by 680 Visitors, Read 722 Times. So here is my next tip to help keep your blog posts ranking well like my entry in the contest. If your not technically inclined or don't have a WordPress blog, this one won't apply, but, if you do this one can really help. Part of the problem that most of us have with blogs is that we can get a post to rank well and then it slips away into search engine oblivion. Here is something that can help keep all of your posts indexed.
The only way I can I knew how to do this was to post an entry on my real estate test blog, but, here is the premise: If you can keep all of your posts indexed and each post links to all of the other posts you will have created a better internal linking structure. This way each post can contribute some page rank to all of the posts. There is a Plugin for this called SRG Clean Archives, but, I discovered (by accident) a better way to do this by inserting a piece of php code wherever you want your posts to show up. Here is the explanation of how to make it work and the code itself. I have this code inserted into my right.php file which is called up in my index, single and post files - if you understand that much then you know how to make it work. If not, just comment below and I can help. It's worth it for the interlinking of the posts.
You can see how it looks on my greatest real estate agent in the world post. Just scroll down and you will see all of the posts on the right side navigation bar. Incidentally, the blog that I have the explanation on is a testing blog so it might look a little funny when you get to it. I'm working on a suckerfish drop down menu for WordPress.
O.K. so that's something else that I have done to make my posts rank higher and stay there longer. If you like it, please feel free to shoot a link to my entry in the contest and let me know you did it. :-)

Dan, I have to make a couple of adjustments to the themes and I will send them to you once I get them done this afternoon. Gotta go show houses to 2 clients today first...
So this is the Recent Topics in your sidebar? Or am I missing something since I've seen that on many blogs? I have to use my other computer to get to my ftp but I don't recall seeing a "right.php" file anywhere. Just checked my main blog using the WP theme editor and do not have a "right.php" file being called up on my index, etc. I'm not crazy about that SRG Clean Archives plug-in, the demo I saw showed what looked like a site map, which I already have on my blogs. Any other ideas or recommendations? That is one thing I dislike about blogs, you can get high ranking for a post but they eventually get de-indexed. I'd love to find something like a plug-in or code that would help.
Yes, it's "recent topics". It's not necessarily in right.php....Wherever you find all of your php stuff for your blogroll, archived posts, categories, etc... is where you will find it. It has really seemed to help keep everything indexed and it looks much better than clean archives.
Ryan I am not so sure about linking every post to every post. Now linking related posts together would make sense. But this idea just seems to dilute the value of a good linking structure. One that would increase the rankings of your most important posts, vs what you described which makes all posts created equal in terms of internal links. Hope that makes sense.
Yes it does make sense and it really is a choice that each blogmaster needs to consider. I think we talked about this over at Dave's blog too. This is a solution that looks much cleaner than SRG clean archives and I have use it on my onsdite blog. I agree that it makes all equal, but, I went that route versus the route to make recent posts rank higher. This code would allow you to keep any number on your index page that you want. Mine is set at 200, but, you could just keep the latest 10 - 20 posts which would help them stay around longer. I went back a few days ago and looked over posts that are a year old and they are showing the same PR as my index page. I attribute it (mostly) to each post indexing all the other posts. I agree that it is a bit of a tought thing to look at aesthetically, which is why this is at least better than SRG Clean Archives for those that want all the posts indexed. All I can say is that it seems to help all of my posts more than before I had them all linked. The newest wordpress version links posts together through tags doesn't it?
Ryan, Believe it or not, I am technical and I do use wordpress. However, I can't find where to add this code. I thought it was in the CSS file but I struggled with where it would go. Can you help me with some direction. Thanks
Roby, In your case, it will go on whatever .php file you have your blogroll on. It looks to be in the right column so if one of your files is called right.php or something like that it would go there. You have a div id="sidebar" so you might have a page named sidebar.php or something like that, I don't know - I'm just guessing....
OK, that just cleared it up for me too. For Wordpress users it would most likely go into the Sidebar. I've been searchijng for right.php and gave up!
Judy, I have tried to place the code in various places in the #sidebar areas. However, I have not been able to get this to work. If you have any luck, please post your solution as will I. Thanks
Roby, Do you have access to the files or just the sidebar? The code needs to go in the actual file. Email me and I will see if I can help you... ryan at ryanwardrealestate dot com
