Forbes magazine ranks Greenville, SC as the fifth best place to “weather the economic downturn”. They based the study on the affordability to purchase a home, property tax rates and job data. Greenville’s downtown is ranked nationally for its architectural detail, historical preservation, great restaurants and a wide variety of entertainment choices. The Blue Ridge Mountains are visible from Downtown and can be seen from the balconies of many condos overlooking the downtown area. Greenville is only a few hours from Atlanta, Ashville, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach which are highly desired shopping and vacation destinations.

The Government of Iraq has ordered 56 turbine generators from the General Electric Co. on Garlinton Rd. in Greenville, SC. This order is worth nearly $3 billion. This represents the largest order that GE has filled to date and should generate 7,000 megawatts of energy daily. Currently Iraq generates about 6,000 megawatts a day. GE claims that the order should be completed by 2010 and that the local work force of 3,200 should be able to handle the production. GE has filled other orders from the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait have all been customers. As Greenville and neighboring Spartanburg SC grew, people started to move to the outlying areas like Cowpens and Gaffney. There are many great Real Estate investment opportunities in the I-85 corridor which is home to the BMW Manufacturing plant only minutes away.
I have a passion for history in our area and on a recent trip to the area I took the pictures below of Possum Trot School that was built in 1880 by Jimmy and Tom Pettit and a few other residents of Cherokee County. The school had 225 students and went to the eleventh grade.
