Decision Making 101
Posted Jun 16, 2009 @ 9:08 pm, Viewed by 274 Visitors, Read 284 Times.I read a great article recently, written by Suzy Welch. Suzy is the author of 10-10-10: A Life-Transforming Idea. At a point in her life when her need to people please started reeking havoc in all aspects of her life, Suzy formed the 10-10-10 idea. For any dilemma she faced, she thought about how her decision would affect her in 10 minutes, 10 months, and 10 years.
The story that Suzy told tells about her decision (years ago, before the 10-10-10 rule came into play) to take her kids with her on a business trip. A multitude of mini-disasters followed: her daughter getting sick, her son getting heatstroke, and both kids escaping a hotel-run event and bursting in during her important presentation. It was this series of unfortunate events that caused Suzy to implement the 10-10-10 rule. She thought about how the rule could have affected her trip: in 10 minutes her kids would be pouting about her being away for a few days, in 10 months she would have the money to take them on a proper vacation with the money she earned, and in 10 years they would have all forgotten that she was away for 3 days in the first place.
I have been thinking a lot about this 10-10-10 rule and applying it to my life when I can. It can truly be applied to any sort of decision you are making – even your Real Estate related ones. For example, if you are deciding whether or not to farm your neighborhood with informative postcards. In 10 minutes, you will probably be sad about seeing the money go out of your account. In 10 months, you will have established name recognition in your community. In 10 years, you will be known as a local market authority. People will be banging down the door to work with you!
We all make important decisions every day in both our personal and work lives. While the 10-10-10 rule isn’t going to tell you what to do, it can serve as a guide to make sure you think the decision through, and ultimately make the right choice. So remember, 10-minutes, 10-months, 10-years. Here’s to good decision making!
