I-73 Impact on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Posted Dec 21, 2007 @ 8:18 am, Viewed by 741 Visitors, Read 745 Times. With 13 million visitors coming to the Grand Strand every year, and with more than 80% of them using the state roads to get here, the Myrtle Beach area has long been in need of an interstate system that would easily connect us to the rest of the world. I-73 will be that link! Stretching from Michigan all the way to the Myrtle Beach area, it will allow visitors to get here without the hassle and congestion of small, battered roads. Part of the southern corridor will run from I-95 all the way to Highway 22, just outside Conway, SC.
In addition to the easy access for visitors to come to our area, I-73 will also serve a number of other purposes for the Grand Strand area. Residents and visitors will be able to access I-95 more quickly and easily than they can now, making the Grand Strand an even more desirable place to call home. The interstate highway will definitely heighten economic growth in the area, and most importantly, will serve as an alternate hurricane evacuation route in case of emergency.
I can only imagine the positive impact this will have on Myrtle Beach Real Estate. By increasing tourism, I-73 will make investment properties more attractive. The new interstate highway will also make the Grande Strand more attractive to people looking to make the area their primary residence. I-73 will certainly relieve traffic on the always congested Highway 501 as well, making property in that area more desirable. The main complaint about homes and condos in that area is that the traffic is awful, especially in the morning and evening when people are going and coming from work.
With construction already well underway in North Carolina, the SCDOT approved the Final Environmental Impact Statement in November 29, 2007, which means the Southern Project is almost complete. They are working on the schedule for the acquisition of right of way currently. This should be complete by late 2008 and hopefully construction will begin shortly after that.
