Transportation:
Getting to NYC in less than one hour is easily accessible with scheduled buses and two train stations to downtown and mid-town New York. For faster train service many New Providence NJ home owners make the short drive to Summit NJ, where they can catch the Midtown Direct train to NYC’s Penn Station which should take about 38 minutes to get you there from Summit NJ. Newark International Airport is a 15-minute drive and the Morristown/Basking Ridge areas take approximately 10-15 minutes. Interstates 78, 287 and Hwy 24 are all easily accessed from New Providence NJ.
New Providence NJ shopping includes local shops with quality merchandize, personal service and competitive pricing. Summit NJ also has a great historic downtown with an even larger selection of high quality and variety of good. The Short Hills Mall in Millburn is 10 minutes and The Livingston Mall is a similar distance. The Bridgewater Mall, one of New Jersey's largest malls, is located west on I-78.

New Providence NJ History:
In order to prevent the British army from capturing New Providence’s supply of salt, the town’s residents dumped their salt supply into a local brook. Ever since the brook has been known as “Salt Brook”. In the time of the Revolutionary war salt was extremely important for preserving meat, something an army on the march had to have.
Regenal government formed, comprising the area’s of today’s New Providence NJ, Summit NJ, Berkeley Heights NJ, Springfield NJ, and was known at Springfield Township. As the area grew New Providence Township was formed containing the areas that now are known as New Providence NJ, Summit NJ, and Berkeley Heights NJ. In 1869 Summit NJ successfully seceded from New Providence Township. Summit NJ had seen tremendous growth which caused deep disputes in New Providence Township government and the final separation.
