Hamilton County Property Tax Rebate Checks

Anybody in the Indianapolis area is well aware of the tax increases and the genius ideas of issuing a rebate check to offset the increase that occurred this year. Well, as the issuing of the rebate checks draws nearer for some counties it seems the tax payer will get stuck footing the bill for actually getting these checks out.While the money for rebates is obviously coming from the state, what the state failed to provide money for was the cost to issue the checks. Marion County may not face this issue because its checks will be delayed due to the reassessment, however Hamilton County will have to pick up the cost to issue checks to some 70,000 taxpayers. Hamilton County estimates that it could cost around $100,000 to get the job done. The state did think ahead a little bit and deposited the funds early so the counties could earn interest on the money to offset the costs, but this will not be enough to compensate for the total cost.

What is the good news? Well, for starters 100K for Hamilton County is next to nothing in the budget. Also, Hamilton County remains some of the most desirable real estate in the Indianapolis area and Carmel real estate has some of the lowest taxes in the area. Hamilton County also remains the fastest growing county in the state and will likely double its tax base over the next 30 years. Due to its robust economy and housing values, Hamilton County will actually be affected very little by this and will continue grow and remain a highly sought after area.
