MRIS Token Update!

We have a token alert…. and you’ll love this. According to an email just received, “Clareity Security (MRIS’s token provider) and Secure Computing (the token manufacturer) have acknowledged a manufacturing issue with the existing tokens that is causing a higher than expected failure rate.” In other words, this newest and greatest technology doesn’t work. I understand that some agents were on their third and fourth token…each time getting one that only managed to function for a short period of time.
So, what is MRIS doing about this? They have hired the same company that made these wonderfully reliable devices to produce another one. Here’s what they say, “In an effort to provide you with the most reliable device to protect your MLS content, replacement tokens – which are the newest and most upgraded model – will be sent to every MRIS subscriber at the home mailing address on file.”
The new tokens are being praised for their smaller size and their clearer displays. In addition, the retrieved password has been changed from one that combined letters and numbers to one that is entirely numeric. They have made this change to eliminate “possible confusion between certain letters and numbers.”
So, everyone is getting one of these new, highly improved tokens and is being asked to activate it…no need to send back the old one (as if someone would want it) and the great news is that this new one will work just like the old one!!
Hooray…we just spent more money to get a better (i.e., functioning) token. I would have been much happier if they just decided to get rid of it all together. I long for the good old days when all I needed to do to log onto the MRIS was to plug in my agent code and password. I didn’t need to run around the house or office looking for my keys (where I keep my token) and I could sometimes even walk to my office without remembering to take my keys with me.

Tokens suck. I have it on a Mickey Mouse key chain as a reminder every day of what I think about the entire idea. Meanwhile, we are signing in so as to "protect " the security of the MLS data that is already being freely high jacked.
I get really annoyed by the token for our MLS here. It would be even more annoying if the tokens did not work. There is talk of a system that would give a code on your phone instead of a token, not sure that would be any better. I also think the tokens are a bit of overkill but at least here, the number of paying subscribers went up significantly after putting the tokens in place.
OC - LOL...I can't agree with you more. Give it away to the "big boys" and make sure the Realtors can't get to it!
Carolyn - Interesting...look at Nicole's comment above (thank you Nicole - Austin is always ahead of the curve!). I don't think the phone would bother me as much...not a bad compromise.
Prediction: MRIS will have the "phone solution" in 4 years! (I'll take bets on the over/under

Hi Gretchen -
Our local Board in Austin just switched last week to an even newer service that got rid of the token all together! We now have a "token" loaded on our smart phone. Instead of carrying a phone and a token, you can now click on "SafeMLS" on your phone and it generates a token number just like you had on that crazy old key fob. We know that REALTORS never leave home without their phone so you are never without your MLS key now either!! I believe the service is through Supra Ekey so ask your board to investigate it!!
All the best,
Nicole Boynton
