Dear MRIS – Has It Really Come to This?

Dear MRIS, I’m writing this letter in regards to your new “SafeMLS Token”.  You know, the oval shaped piece of plastic with the LCD that looks like it came straight out of a 1980s digital wrist watch – the one with the button I push that gives me a new passcode that’s required every time I need to log into my MRIS account.  The “Token” that I therefore have to have with me at all times in order to do my job.  Yeah, just wanted to thank you for making my job that much more complicated.  Further, I appreciate your short-sightedness and continual bureaucratic ideologies -- punishing those who follow the rules with another layer of red tape.

SafeMLS ToenI’m not sure how other Realtors across the country log into their MLS systems for property searches, tax records, price reductions, property history...but remember the good old days when all you needed was a passcode and a computer?  Oh those were times, MRIS.  But I knew our time together was too good to be true.  You’ve changed.  Because you detected a few cheaters who “borrowed” passcodes in order to avoid your fees or who gave out passcodes to clients, you decided it made sense to set up a system that punishes all of us.  MRIS, you can’t stop trusting just because you’ve gotten cheated on in the past.

I get it MRIS, you don’t want to be cheated on any more -- but I was expecting more from you.  Why couldn’t you just track down those cheaters and punished them appropriately?  Could you not have developed a system that tracked IP addresses -- so if the same account is was linked to 16 different IP addresses in one day, it’d be pretty safe to assume there could be some “cheating” going on?  Combine this technology with a hefty fine or suspension for the “cheaters” and I think you would’ve had a long-term solution and we could’ve salvaged our relationship.

I know you’re the biggest, baddest MLS provider in the country; so  I understand you may have little time for thinking of the daily needs of your individual members in this mobile, “fast information” industry (just to be clear, we don’t use index cards anymore).  Let me give you some scenarios.

Say I get a sign call, or a call from a website consumer asking for the listing history of a particular property.  I’m sitting right in front of my computer at the office with high speed internet connection -- but I forgot where I left my keys.  So now I’m running around the office, looking through my briefcase, stalling as long as I can.  And when I finally give up, I apologize (blaming it on a computer glitch – because how can I possibly explain this ridiculous system) and ask to call them back.  For today’s consumer, that may be just enough time for them to go find that information elsewhere (and I would do the same thing if I were in their shoes).  Beyond possible relationship losses, it’s just bad form.

And, MRIS, there’s also the issue of wireless communication...many of us have small laptops, Blackberrys, iPhones, and other devices so we can provide “fast information” on the run (sometimes literally!).  And this wireless technology is growing with or without you. I’d like for us to participate together in this movement but how can we succeed with your treasured “Token”.  Short of getting rid of this nuisance, you should at least offer some sort of implantation program, so we can be assured of always having access to you.  I’ve seen some of the agents in my office with the “Token” on a string around their neck but I just look silly in the shower with mine on.

Many thanks for keeping us in line, while making sure that we take two steps back for every one step forward.

Warm regards,

Kevin, from The Koitz Group

So let me get this straight, you have to generate a "new" passcode every time you want to access your MLS system? That is ridiculous - I get mad at my forum software when it makes me change my forum password every 6 months - who is the braniac responsible for this one? What kind of accountability to the individual members does MRIS have - is there just some guy dreaming up schemes over there without research - hmmm this is a good idea - let's do this Sorry to hear about the new system Kevin, great blog post, bad solution by MRIS - but cmon dude, don't be so hard on yourself, I bet you don't look that bad in the shower with your token generator on

Thanks Morgan...I'm not touching the shower thing (!) but your point about accountability to  individual members is a great one.  It often feels lie we're just a bunch of Lemmings who shake our heads but follow along with each "blunder".  You know almost as well as I do MRIS does nothing to make our jobs any easier!  Interesting though -- it looks like this is not just an MRIS thing ('though they're still the worst).  It looks like "SafeMLS" is sweeping the continent.  http://www.clareitysecurity.com/customers.cfm.  I'd be interested to hear who else has been putting up with this madness.

We use the Safe Token at SoCalMLS as well. It's a real pain for the reasons you state, Kevin. They think they are safe-keeping the data when, in fact, you can still pass the password to anyone anyway.  I rather they protect our listings from Trulia, Zillow and the multitude of the others than protect us from the information we pay to get.

Wait till your token breaks.  I've had to send it back three times now to MRIS.

I figured I'd hear from the OCTeam   In doing some research after my post (should be the other way around shouldn't it?  Oh well...), I saw that SoCal got "hit" with the Token.  Well said regarding Trulia and the likes.  I can't pretend to understand how or who "runs" our respective boards and the hierarchy -- but I can't help but feel suspicious -- that is, who's really profiting from these ridiculous  "innovations"?  And Jedwar5, funny you bring that up too as I've had colleagues already go through the replacement process.  Looking forward to my day!

I am so hoping, we (RMLS) doesn't need to RESORT to (SAFEMLS), because of CHEATERS in

the System. The (SAFEMLS) will just make it more difficult for us to obtain our information to

sell the properties in MLS.  Thank you, Darlene Hafner, Coldwell Banker Burnet

Kevin, never saw this when it was first written.  Just wanted to let you know that my MLS has required a secure token for the past two years.  I HATE the token, I work by laptop all over my house so it is a pain to find my keys every time I want to log onto the MLS.  After two years our area is getting rid of the token and they are going to replace it with a combination of security questions and from what I understand authentication of the user's hard drive.  This new system will allow a user to identify up to five computers that can be linked into a user.  If someone is on a non-authenticated computer the user will answer additional security questions before logging onto the MLS.  I think getting away from the token is an EXCELLENT idea and I'm looking forward to the first quarter of 2009 when the change is scheduled to take place.

Maybe you could lobby for something similar.

@Darlene - Thanks for your experiences and sorry for taking a while to get back.  Thanksgiving pulled me away from here (I know!).  And I hope you don't have to deal with it either!  IMO, forget about the cheaters (bottom feeders anyway), penalize them huge when caught.  It's the nature of bureaucracy I know to put a red tape up for the couple percent who don't respect their profession and their peers, but SafeMLS is NOT the solution.  Man, I could talk about this for days

@ Hi Carolyn - You're the best, thanks for sharing.  Sound like a much more reasonable solution.  MRIS is a Machine -- think mid-atlantic version of NAR -- maybe worse!  Please keep me updated and perhaps you could show me how your system works when you're up and running so I can inform the masses!  Nobody's happy...so I just need a solution and platform to make some noise .  Thanks again...
