Testing the strength of REW Blogs vs. Active Rain Blogs
Posted Apr 14, 2009 @ 12:02 am, Viewed by 844 Visitors, Read 919 Times.I started blogging on Active Rain and Real Estate Webmasters about the same time- the last quarter of 2007. I actually have more posts on my AR blog than my REW blog but I've spent more time recently on REW for a lot of reasons but thought it might be an interesting test to see which blog had more strength.
Both my Active Rain and Real Estate Webmaster blogs have posts on that rank on the first page of google for similar types of terms. Both blogs have a couple of posts that pull in a moderate amount of traffic - although one brings in a steadier stream than the other.
I realize this isn't a completely scientific test - other people are more than welcome to do something similar - more data points the better. There are so many cities I haven't written about so I've decided to focus on three places in my market area to see how they stack up and write March 2009 market statistics for each place...
The other difficulty is that the blog posts need to be different enough not to be considered duplicate content - I don't believe in posting blogs with duplicate content and the REW terms of service also do not allow for duplicate content - this post is probably the closest I've ever written about the same subject and I'll have to see if it goes far enough when it get's moderated. I think this could be fun...

Sorry, this is kind of an intro post. I'm going to write three posts, probably over the next three days. One post for each city - market statistics for March 2009 - a post in REW and one for the same months stats in AR. I never write about the same subject matter - so I don't know how successful this is going to be. Three posts might not be enough of a test - I don't know - just thought it would be fun to compare the two blogs.
Wishing there was a way to edit a comment - but anyway realized didn't really say what I was testing - Keyword ~ city market statistics March 2009 - guess I should probably specify a time frame as well. Both blogs index pretty quickly - but there tends to be movement for a few days. I'll check the results one week from the last post.
No linking out from other blogs either - just see how the two posts do on their own.
Would you consider it too similar if both posts had the same title?
Yeah we post on both blogs. They both bring us traffic.
I made a blog post on REW and Active rain about a neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida.
If you search Google for 'oakleaf homes for sale in sarasota, florida' (which happens to be the exact title on my active rain post) you will see that REW blog post ranks #1 and #2 while Active rain is #7.
On a side note look at the Ziki result for Gary Ashton. I show it as #9. 8 of the 10 results are about my oakleaf video blog post. Obviously, not a very competitive phrase.
AR's posts are much further down the list Marc!
OK I got busy with taxes and stuff - will start these posts soon...
Carolyn, Like many of us, we'll post the same blog entry but in unique content with the same title to test the authority of the site. REW continues to rock! Hmm, I say this wondering why I'm not posting here more often!
I haven't tested it directly, but my gut tells me that REW would outrank AR post for post. With that said, it should be interesting to see how your test goes Carolyn.
Update - for 'oakleaf homes for sale in sarasota, florida' my AR post is not on the first page anymore but my REW blog post remains #1. I have other similar examples like - 'foxfire west homes for sale in sarasota, florida'.
The posts I am comparing involve video. What is somewhat interesting is that for 'oakleaf homes for sale in sarasota, florida' 9 out of the 10 responses on the first page are directly or indirectly related to a blog post or video submission about the Oakleaf subdivision that i have made. #10 is the Youtube video, #8 is my Three Oaks subdivision video on AOL. The phrase is not competitive at all but this is an example of how you can dominate an uncompetitive niche.
Was thinking maybe I didn't need to write the actual posts since Marc already has data
OK my first set of posts are up: Winters CA Market Statistics March 2009

AR post: http://activerain DOT com/blogsview/1039291/Winters-CA-Market-Statistics-March-2009
Hope to get the next set of posts up in a couple of days - maybe sooner...

I am not totally clear on how / where you are making these blog posts and how you are testing this. Can you share more of the specifics?
