Earth Day - What Does It Mean To You? Comments...

The story goes that Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin after a trip he took to Santa Barbara, CA right after that dreadful oil spill off their coast in 1969. He was so outraged by what he saw that he went back to Washington and passed a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth.
In September 1969, at a conference in Seattle, Washington, it was announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment. There was a rising concern of an environmental crisis sweeping the nation's college campuses and so it was that on April 22, 1970 the First Earth Day came into being with 20 million Americans going into the streets for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.
The housing market is finally getting more involved in Green Homes every year, pressured by people that desire this kind of living.
It has been good for the planet and we have all given up some things to better the planet and the lives of people for generations. President Nixon created the EPA in 1970 with a mission to protect the environment and public health. The same year Congress amended the Clean Air Act to set national air quality, auto emission, and anti-pollution standards.
This was always where I felt like I gave up the most for the environment. I was a motor head or hot rodder with numerous fast cars (and on a first name basis with all the local cops - grin) including my 1970 GTO with a factory option 455 cubic inch monster motor that I added a 6 pack or three deuces to, and for those of you too young to know or remember that was three two barrel carburetors that helped propel that car down the highway at 180 miles an hour. I know, I know the speedometer only went to 160 MPH but the cops radar said 180+ MPH on more than one occasion. Anyway 1970 was the begriming of the end for my passion as it was the last year of the true gas guzzling lead burning, rubber shredding muscle cars. In 1973 the EPA began phasing out leaded gasoline but automakers were already backing off the horsepower and started adding emissions controls which for the next 15 or so years just created gutless crappy cars, that's my opinion anyway.
So in the last 38 years there have been many things done that have improved our planet and every year on Earth Day we think about all that has been done and so much that still needs to be done to improve our world.
Many States and communities are getting very Green Minded, including Green Homes and I am happy that Oregon is one of the Leading Green States that believe Earth Day is every day.
What are your thoughts on Earth Day?...
