Living a Greener Life in Three Installments

With the world population scheduled to hit 7 billion people in 2011, it’s getting more and more clear that we all have to do what we can to reduce our impact on the environment that supports us all.

Over the next three weeks, here and on my Tampa Real Estate Blog, I’ll be talking about ways that your family can help save energy and reduce its impact on the environment. This week, I’ve offered some suggestions for little changes you can make in your home and your daily life. These things don’t take a large initial investment and most will start saving you money almost immediately.

Next week, I’ll take a look at green alternatives to traditional remodel and renovations like roof replacements, new heating systems and other major projects. If you’re making major repairs or renovations, it just makes sense to look at options that are kinder to the Earth (and most are kinder to your wallet in the long run, too).

The third installment is for those of you who are buying new construction or building your dream home. In that one, I’ll talk about energy efficient homes, using sustainable materials and incorporating the newest best practices in green architecture and building into your new home.

Living a Greener Life on a Shoestring Budget
It doesn’t take a big investment to reduce your impact on the Earth – just a little bit of forethought and attention to the choices that you make. Here are five simple things that can make a major difference in how much energy your family uses.

  1. Find and repair leaky faucets and pipes to save up to 2,700 gallons of water a year.
  2. Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps to save 25% of the energy used for lighting your home.
  3. Use weather stripping to cut the cost of cooling your home as well as heating it.
  4. Unplug appliances and cell phone chargers that draw energy even when they’re not being used.
  5. Keep your dryer’s lint filter clean to cut drying time and energy costs by as much as 10%.
You’ll find more details on these suggestions along with many more suggestions to help reduce your energy footprint at living green on my Tampa real estate blog.
